John Blackwell’s monolithic sculptures have a fascinating tactile quality. They give the impression of rusting and oil stained metal rather than ceramic. Through texturing the wet clay and creating layers through slips, glazes and stains the resulting works look old as if altered gradually over time, perhaps even salvaged from the ground or a derelict building site.

Mae cyffyrddiad hudolus i gerfluniau monolithig John Blackwell. Maent yn rhoi’r argraff o rwd a metel sydd wedi’i staenio gan olew yn hytrach na cherameg. Drwy weadu’r clai gwlyb a chreu haenau drwy slip, gwydredd a staen, mae’r gwaith a ddaw yn sgîl hyn yn ymddangos yn hen fel petai wedi newid yn raddol gydag amser, efallai fel petai wedi’i achub rhag y ddaear neu safle adeiladu segur.
